Newsletter – March 2026

Essex County Council is the administrative body governing the County of Essex, responsible for a wide range of public services and infrastructure at the county level. As a tier of local government, it works within the legislative framework set by the central government to provide services more efficiently on a scale larger than that of the District and Town Council.

Here’s what Essex County Council does:

  • Education: Overseeing the local education authority responsibilities, including the maintenance of state schools, setting school term dates, and managing the admissions processes. They are also involved in adult education and continuing education initiatives.
  • Social Care: Providing social services such as child protection, support for the elderly, and care for those with disabilities or special needs.
  • Highways and Transportation: Managing and maintaining the county’s roads (excluding those managed by Highways England), including fixing potholes, controlling traffic, implementing road safety measures, and overseeing public transport strategies.
  • Public Health: Implementing health strategies that address local public health issues in line with national health policies. This includes health education, disease prevention, and emergency preparedness.
  • Waste Management: Operating recycling centers and waste disposal, and working with district councils to manage household waste collection.
  • Libraries and Cultural Services: Running library services and supporting cultural initiatives within the county, including the management of archives and promotion of the arts.
  • Strategic Planning: Managing large-scale planning issues that affect the entire county, such as the development of new housing or commercial projects that require coordination across multiple localities.
  • Environmental Conservation: Protecting and enhancing the county’s natural environment through conservation projects, biodiversity strategies, and sustainability initiatives.
  • Community Safety: Coordinating with the police and other agencies to develop strategies for crime prevention and community safety.
  • Economic Development: Encouraging business growth and investments in Essex, supporting local economies and employment.
  • Fire and Rescue Services: Operating fire and rescue services to ensure safety and respond to emergencies.

Essex County Council’s role is to ensure the provision of essential services that are best managed at a scale larger than individual towns and cities, providing a link between central government policies and local implementation. For a town like Brightlingsea, the council’s activities directly impact daily life, from children’s journey to school to the condition of the roads and public spaces. They work in partnership with district and town councils to align county-wide initiatives with local needs, ensuring that the specific concerns of different communities are addressed within the larger Essex context.
