Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in Brightlingsea
As we approach the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Brightlingsea Town Council is preparing to participate in this commemoration, reflecting on the bravery and sacrifice of those who took part in this pivotal event in history. We invite all residents to join us in honouring this milestone with activities that will take place on the 6th of June.
What is D-Day?
D-Day, 6th June 1944, marks the day Allied forces launched a massive invasion on the beaches of Normandy, France, during the Second World War. Known as Operation Overlord, this operation was the largest amphibious assault in history and played a crucial role in the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation. Over 150,000 troops from the UK, United States, Canada, and other Allied nations stormed the beaches in a bold effort to defeat the Axis powers. The courage and sacrifice of these soldiers are remembered and honoured every year on D-Day.
Brightlingsea’s D-Day 80th Anniversary Activities
In line with the D-Day 80th Anniversary Guide, Brightlingsea has planned the following activities:
8:00 AM – Proclamation Reading by the Town Crier
Join us at the War Memorial in Victoria Place at 8:00 AM, where our Town Crier will read the official D-Day 80th Anniversary Proclamation. This poignant moment will serve as a reminder of the bravery displayed on that historic day.
9:15 PM – Beacon Lighting Ceremony
At 9:15 PM, we will gather again at the War Memorial for the lighting of the beacon. This act of remembrance will be accompanied by a tribute read by the Mayor, reflecting on the sacrifices made and the enduring legacy of D-Day. The beacon lighting symbolises hope and the enduring spirit of freedom that emerged from the events of 6th June 1944.
