On 6th June 2024, the town of Brightlingsea came together to honour the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings with a series of heartfelt events, underscoring our community’s respect and remembrance for the heroes of World War II.
The day began with the Town Crier, Alan Stevens, reading the D-Day 80 Proclamation at 8.00 am at the War Memorial. This brief but poignant ceremony set the tone for the day’s activities.
The main event was held in the evening at the War Memorial in Victoria Place. A significant number of Town and District Councillors, County Councillor and Dignitaries gathered with residents to pay their respects. The ceremony included readings and moments of silence to honour those who fought and sacrificed their lives during the D-Day landings.

Mayor of Brightlingsea, Councillor John Carr, who organised the event with the help of Brightlingsea Town Council staff, expressed his gratitude for the community’s participation. “It was heartening to see so many people come out to pay their respects. Our collective memory of D-Day is vital, as it reminds us of the sacrifices made for the freedoms we enjoy today,” he said.
The evening concluded with the reading of The International Tribute and the lighting of an official D-Day Beacon at 9.15 pm. Deputy Mayor, Councillor Mat Court reflected on the monumental scale of Operation Overlord, stating, “The scale and epic nature of the D-Day operations are almost beyond comprehension. It is a privilege to honour the incredible bravery and determination of those who took part.”
The community’s strong engagement and the presence of local dignitaries underscored Brightlingsea’s commitment to remembering its history and honouring those who served.
